Service learning is a method of teaching that connects students to meaningful issues in the community and links directly to course objectives and curricular standards.

Service learning has been shown to increase students’ “locus of control” and “self-efficacy”, both of which are important resiliency factors.  Service learning has successfully demonstrated to be a research based approach to improving students’ positive character traits by providing an authentic context to develop those traits.

Service learning is also a recognized strategy in dropout prevention and student engagement.
