Health Education is the development, delivery, and evaluation of planned learning activities which are developmental and sequential. The curriculum is designed to positively influence the total health knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of individuals by increasing their abilities to make informed decisions. The health education curriculum is driven by the MPS learning targets which include the knowledge, understandings, attitudes, and skills that are important for balanced academic, social, emotional and physical growth and development. Health education can and should be integrated into all academic subjects. Our goal is to develop confident, self-reliant, and self- directed individuals who are capable of reaching their full potential as productive members of society. The MPS Health Leaning Targets have been aligned to the WI State Standards. Please visit the following website to view the MPS K-12 Health Learning Targets

News: Combating CA-MRSA in Physical Education, Sports and Dance

With "community-acquired" MRSA infecting the sport and physical activity community in growing numbers, it is critically important for coaches, administrators and physical education teachers to become familiar with the potential lethality of the disease. The November/December issue of the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (JOPERD), which is published by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), provides that valuable information.

Entitled "Combating CA-MRSA in Physical Education, Sports and Dance," the article discusses the rise of the infection in all levels of sport, including high school, college and professional sports, necessary precautions to take, diagnosis and treatment. Written by Amanda K. Andrews, Ph.D., ATC, assistant professor, Troy University; Candice Howard Shaughnessy, Ph.D., interim chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion, Tory University, and Jon E. Adams, physician assistant and certified athletic trainer, Pike Medical Center, Troy, AL, the article reports that the major component in preventing the spread of CA-MRSA is to educate the students, parents, faculty and staff.

The authors state that the spread of CA-MRSA is often hastened by poor hygiene, sharing towels, direct skin-to-skin contact, and the close quarters of a locker room. Among some of their recommendations are to clean all equipment that comes in contact with bare skin and multiple individuals after each use or at least twice a week, encourage students who keep clothing in their gym lockers to have their clothing laundered after each use; encourage students to report any suspicious skin sore or boil to a teacher or to the school nurse immediately discourage students from sharing items such as towels, clothing, shoes, razors, roll-on deodorant, and athletic equipment that touches the skin.

"Left undetected, CA-MRSA can be a deadly bacterial infection. Educating sport and dance participants on detecting an infection early and on appropriate treatment are all integral components to avoiding a CA-MRSA outbreak within school facilities. It is imperative that appropriate preventive measures be implemented to ensure the safety of all students."

HH seeks to reduce the risk of CVD in the lives of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) students and their families by providing education in four areas that are critical to good health: improved nutrition, increased physical activity, tobacco use prevention and blood pressure screenings.
