Tobacco Education Card Grouping/Commonalities

Purpose:  Help group participants realize the many things they have in common; including a concern about tobacco use and its risks.  They will also build their knowledge regarding the risks from tobacco use.

Materials:  Tobacco Education Deck of Cards (can be purchased at www.deathcards.com) or a regular deck of playing cards.

Activity:  The group facilitator will hand out a playing card to each group participants.  Group participants are to put their playing card face down.  Participants are not to look at their playing card and must exchange their card 3 times with other group participants.  While continuing not to look at their card, participants are directed to place their card on their forehead and hold it in place.  Without talking the participants are directed to find their group based on the number on the card.  If the tobacco education cards are being used for this activity, the small groups are to discuss the tobacco fact on their cards.  Then they need to find things they have in common that are not obvious by sight. Groups earn one point for each commonality they can come up with and they earn 2 points for any commonality that has to do with tobacco.

Round 2:  Participants are directed to hold their card face down and exchange the card 3 times with participants outside of their first group while continuing not to look at their card.  Participants are directed to place their card on their forehead and hold it in place.  Without talking or looking at their card, they need to find their group based on the suit of their card.  Once in their groups, discuss the tobacco facts on the cards if you are using the tobacco education deck of cards.  Second, the group must find things they have in common that are not obvious by sight.  The group earns 1 point for each commonality and 2 points for commonalities that have to do with tobacco.

Round 3:  Plays the same as above, but they find their group in this round based on color of the suit on their card.

Processing:

1.    What assumptions can you make about the group after playing this activity?

2.    Did people have more in common or not in common?

3.    What were some of the commonalities the group shared that had to do with tobacco?
